Upon further digging, this is what I've found as a new potential solution. I recently came back from a trip, and despite doing the usual steps I've read on a dual SIM iPhone (change primary cellular data line, disable cellular data switching, disable data roaming on Verizon, don't make any calls / send texts) I still ended up triggering $10 TravelPass every day because even with data roaming off, it seems like iPhones still send a nominal amount of data over the network. Setup: iPhone 13 Pro Max, Verizon on eSIM ![]() Receive calls and be able to send / receive texts via wifi or local SIM. ![]() Keep phone number registered to iMessage. Avoid TravelPass / pay as you go charges. Goal: Use local SIM while traveling abroad.
